Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are metal posts that your dentist at Lakeside Family Dental surgically inserts into your jawbone to form a durable, synthetic root system. With implants, your prosthetic teeth have excellent support and won’t slip or slide around inside your mouth. When it comes to replacing missing teeth, implants are a highly effective option available to you. Your new teeth will look, feel, and function like natural teeth.

Whether you’re missing one tooth, multiple, or an entire set of top or bottom teeth, implants can help restore and enhance your smile.

How do dental implants work?

Getting dental implants typically requires a few visits to Lakeside Family Dental. Dr. Hassan is a board-certified periodontist who, along with Dr. Fain, helps patients through the dental implant process.

At your first visit, your dentist takes comprehensive digital scans to evaluate your teeth. These personalized scans are sent to a lab that makes your impressions.

During the implant procedure, the team offers sedation dentistry so that you feel comfortable and relaxed. Then your dentist inserts the metal post directly into your jawbone to create a durable, synthetic root system that rivals the strength of natural roots with one exception – metal can’t become infected. Your jaw will need time to heal and fully integrate the implant. This process, which is called “osseointegration,” may take several months.

After the procedure, you can use cold ice packs and ibuprofen to help with any pain and swelling. The team recommends eating soft foods (neither too hot nor too cold) while you’re sore for the first few days. Until your next appointment, you wear a temporary denture that restores the appearance of your smile while you wait for the crown or bridge to be attached. Once your jawbone is fully healed, you’ll return to the office to have your permanent restoration attached to your implant.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants drastically improve your appearance by filling gaps in your smile. However, the benefits aren’t limited to cosmetic rewards. By replacing missing teeth, you also prevent harmful tooth shifting.

When you’re missing teeth, the neighboring teeth tend to shift into the empty spaces, causing misalignment. Crooked teeth are harder to keep clean and increase your risk of decay and periodontal disease. Luckily, implants combat tooth shifting and promote solid oral health.

How long do dental implants last?

As long as you take excellent care of your implants, they should last you a lifetime. Just make sure to brush and floss as you would with natural teeth in order to keep them clean and healthy. Don’t forget to maintain regular visits to the office so that Dr. Fain and Dr. Hassan can monitor your implants over time and make minor adjustments as needed.
